I was reading about the 20 years of inkscape here https://www.phoronix.com/news/Inkscape-1.3.1-For-20-Years and for curiosity I went to OpenOCD git log. The first commit is from a SVN commit of 2006-06-02, but there were files with (c) 2004 by Dominic Rath. Any idea on when we should celebrate the 20 years?
<PaulFertser>
:D probably we should ask Dominic

The thesis was "Submitted by Dominic Rath, summer semester 2005" so it's natural to assume 2004 was the year the development started.

Maybe we should consider v1.0 for the 20 years anniversary :)
<PaulFertser>
That doesn't sound like a bad idea to me :)

Yep, nice way to celebrate!

I'm wondering if I can ask some questions as I'm confused about openocd

TomLovie: sure welcome
<TomLovie>
ok, from what I understand is that openocd is a piece of software that will communicate with a debug module/dongle - do you also install openocd on the dongle itself?
<PaulFertser>
TomLovie: no, the dongle is an independent device
<PaulFertser>
TomLovie: there were some special SoC based dongles back then but not anymore
<PaulFertser>
TomLovie: also you can use OpenOCD to bitbang so e.g. RaspberryPi board can be used as a debug dongle running OpenOCD.
<TomLovie>
so openocd is not a firmware that can be installed on the dongle
<PaulFertser>
Some dongles are MCU or CPLD based and can be reconfigured to support different protocols. But no dongles run OpenOCD, yes.
<TomLovie>
ok that clears things up - thank-you
<PaulFertser>
TomLovie: what debug adapters are you considering and what targets?
<TomLovie>
I have a clone stlink that I was trying to use, but stmcubeide complains about it. so I was wondering if its possible to somehow change its firmware to make it work.
<PaulFertser>
TomLovie: what does OpenOCD say about it?
<PaulFertser>
I've used stlink clones recently and they worked fine with OpenOCD.
<TomLovie>
I will have to try it and let you know - I believe that I was trying to use STLINK, and it wanted to do a firmware update, and then it stopped, so I'm not sure if the firmware update has bricked it, or something else... thanks for your help.

TomLovie: there're ways to flash stlink with working original firmware even if it's fully erased
