<braunr> hello
<PaulFertser> Hi :)
<braunr> i managed to get my home-made connector along with an olimex usb probe working, but now i'm wondering about a proper solution
<braunr> so naturally, an stlink
<braunr> aiui, stlinks can buffer data coming from swo
<braunr> but i haven't found reliable numbers about its speed and size
<braunr> mhm :)
<PaulFertser> #define STLINK_TRACE_SIZE 4096
<PaulFertser> #define STLINK_TRACE_MAX_HZ 2000000
<PaulFertser> #define STLINK_V3_TRACE_MAX_HZ 24000000
<braunr> oh, where does that come from ?
<PaulFertser> src/jtag/drivers/stlink.c
<PaulFertser> BTW, https://orbcode.org/orbtrace-mini/ says you might probably buy a fully assembled device from zyp.
<braunr> i'm pretty sure my company will decide in favour of the stlink
<PaulFertser> Why not jlink?
<braunr> or that
<braunr> but not something home made, which risks of unavailability :
<braunr> :/
<braunr> with*
<PaulFertser> stlink v3 especially is kind of offending, ST decided to somehow cripple it to make debugging non-st targets impossible.
<braunr> ugh
<karlp> I've used an stlinkv2 for years with ITM, and been very happy with it. it's not as fast as a v3, or an orbtrace or a jlink pro, but it's _far_ more than "just debug" already,
<karlp> so ymmv, depends how much trace you _reallly_ need.
<braunr> i might need a lot
<braunr> not sure yet
<PaulFertser> Probably that's an opportunity to get a decent LA.
<braunr> maybe
<braunr> or maybe just a high speed serial adapter
<karlp> well, you "should" have an stlink lying around already, just on any nucleo/disco board, that's been enough for me for ages :)
<braunr> i actually don't :)
<braunr> well that's not true, i have on an stm32mp1 discovery board
<braunr> but that's it
<karlp> yeah, CN12 probably has swd, but unlike the "regular" disco/nucleo boards, it doesn't have headers fo rtargetting an external device.
<karlp> well, it's ~10 currency units addon to your next distributor order, might be easier to get started than some other tools?
<braunr> i already have something that works
<braunr> now i'm looking for something that another developer can easily and reliably use, without wondering what pin goes where :p
<karlp> the "hardest" bit is really, "what debug connector did you put on your target board" vs "what debug connectors does my dongle hw have" IMO :)
<karlp> the rest is all ~interchangeable
<braunr> yes
<braunr> but smart people made it sure that it you have the standard jtag pins, you also can have swd+swo
<karlp> what's the target hw again?
<braunr> stm32f7
<braunr> custom board
<braunr> with a 20pin standard jtag connector
<karlp> stlinkv3, orbtrace, jlink-pro all have versions with the 2x5x1.27mm pitch
<braunr> yes that won't be a problem fortunately
<karlp> you put the old jumbo 20 pin header on? whee
<karlp> luxurious space :)
<braunr> on our dev board, yes
<braunr> the actual product is much smaler
<braunr> smaller*
<karlp> stlnk v2/v3 orbtrace and jlink-pro all have versions with 2x10x2.54 as well, some with or without adaptor plates.
<karlp> (your cookie prompt doesn't even agree with itself, fwiw, though that'sprobably not your issue...)
<braunr> ... :)
<karlp> (it refers to clicking a button that isn't an option...)
<braunr> i have more to rant about than just cookies but it is what it is, and my opinions are my opinions :D
<braunr> (i have to make it clear than i'm only talking about the website, the people here are pretty nice)
