Even if the board was not flashed or the image broken, you should see the ROM code kicking. This is what f_ is referring to. If you are not seeing that, in order or likelihood :

* Board is not powered: red LED indicates power
<jbrunet>
* UART adapter is incorrectly wired (or broken ... those things don't live forever)

* If you are sure of all the above, then your board might be broken but that is very unlikely
