<Guest85> Hi, I'm new to Kodi, which I installed on a laptop using LibreElec, and I can't see how to transfer media files from a USB device to the HDD, which currently has no media files on it...

<mack> Guest85: you can use kodi's File Manager to do what you need. You might need to add your USB device and the /storage directory on the HDD as sources in the File Manager if you can't browse to them.

<Guest85> I might be new to Kodi but not to Linux, which I've been using for well over 10 years after migrating from Windows, and I've NEVER had any problems transferring data from external devices to HDDs and visa versa. I've no idea what you're on about; as stated previously all that appears in file manager on both windows is: "..", "500GB" (the external
<Guest85> USB device) "Profile directory" and "Add source"; I can navigate inside the 500GB external drive and inside Profile
<Guest85> Kodi is not exactly user-friendly and seems to be yet another system by geeks for geeks, so I guess not for me as I've better things to do than to waste time on what should be straightforward tasks
<vpeter> Then just use console to copy/move files around?
<oblikoamorrale> I don't quite understand the relevance of dissatisfaction with kodi in libreelec channel; nevertheless, I must note that kodi has improved greatly since its beginnings under original 'xbmc' name, but as always, there's room for improvement

<Guest85> The relevance is I installed Kodi using Libre Elec and my attempts to find a solution directly with #kodi*linux has so far met with little useful advice, just geek talk, and I tried copy, all it did was to copy the files in the same directory on the external drive, so I've now got double of everything. No worries guys, I'll simply ditch Kodi and
<Guest85> use something less geeky to play music. ...
<oblikoamorale> Guest85: if you're after audio playback only, take a look at volumio. actually there's a few audio dedicated distros, but volumio comes to mind first

<Guest85> Thanks oblikoamorale, I also wanted a simple OS to view photos a videos but music is the main objective as I'm a DJ in my spare time and thought Kodi would be an improvement on aimp3 only released for windows, which has features I haven't found in any other music player including Kodi...

<p9> Guest85: Kodi's file manager is a bit clunky because since it's designed to be navigated with TV remote control
<p9> Also I don't see huge appeal in running Kodi on a laptop it really shines on big screen
<Guest85> ... it certainly is clunky on a laptop but it seems clear they're not interested in bugs or improvements... G'night

<p9> do kernels shipped in libreelec come from upstream or are they modified by device vendors?

* mack shrugs. He said earlier "…need to add <devices> as sources…" then Guest85 complained that they couldn't see anything except one device and Add Source.
<mack> I guess I didn't guess at their setup and label steps as 1. 2. and 3.

<diederik> p9: I don't know LE's build process, but it seems (to me) that it's the upstream kernel + a patch set, like f.e. this: https://github.com/LibreELEC/LibreELEC.tv/tree/master/projects/Rockchip/patches/linux/default
