<uwumeowmeownyaa> Why would someone need a pip2crux or ctan2crux kind of program? Isn't is better to use the underlying package managers directly?
<zorz> uwumeowmeownyaa: can you install python's fastapi-slim or selenium with the underlying package manager?

<uwumeowmeownyaa> zorz: as for selenium, you can. You will need to install at least one driver, though.
<uwumeowmeownyaa> The fastapi-slim package seems to be installable via pip too.
<zorz> all of them can be installable via pip
<zorz> there is no selenium or fastapi package in crux. so... if you dont want to use pip --user and want a system wide installation, what you do?
<zorz> create a port of the package
<zorz> this is what it does.

<uwumeowmeownyaa> Why install it system-wide when there are virtual environments?
<zorz> i dont like virtual enviroments.
<uwumeowmeownyaa> Why?
<zorz> just dont like them. why to activate a virtual enviroment for something i use regularly, plus speed.. virtual enviroments are good only for testing in my use case.
<uwumeowmeownyaa> Sounds fair.
<zorz> uwumeowmeownyaa: unless PID 1, nothing else is standard :)

<braewoods__> zorz, heh. Speaking of PIDs, I was surprised to start seeing PIDs with really high values on recent distributions.
<zorz> braewoods__: you mean /proc/sys/kernel/pid_max? Linux used 16-bit PIDs, now its 32-bit. up to 4mil bye default.
<braewoods__> Probably.
<frinnst> wtf stupid qt6, why does it fail to compile if you have an older version installed?
<frinnst> /usr/lib/libQt6Core.so.6: version `Qt_6.8' not found (required by /tmp/qt6-base-6.8.0-1-work/src/build/lib/qt6/rcc)
<frinnst> well duh

<cruxbridge> <tim> frinnst: I see a weird missing file in footprint outside of my build container too thats triggered by additional packages being available at build time.. not sure what it is yet
<cruxbridge> <tim> check if qt6-base actually got updated
<cruxbot> [core/3.7]: libarchive: updated to version 3.7.7
<cruxbot> [contrib/3.7]: monit: updated to version 5.34.2

<uwumeowmeownyaa> I think that I forgot a very important thing. When updating a CRUX GNU/Linux package called a "port", the utility program that performs the update, also referred to as a "package manager", does not recognize new dependencies added to the package after the initial download of a port. There is a way to find such packages, but is there a way to install it as a dependency, not a standalone package?
ppetrov^ has joined #crux
<frinnst> yeah qt6-base was updated. but it's been like this forever more or less - the build system looks on the host filesystem for stuff, if available, and tries to use that. Since the verison on the host fs is wrong it will fail
<frinnst> I ususally just remove the packages and depinst them again
<frinnst> (like i'm doring right now :))
<cruxbot> [xorg/3.7]: xorg-bdftopcf: updated to version 1.1.2
<cruxbot> [xorg/3.7]: xorg-xtrans: updated to version 1.5.1
<cruxbot> [xorg/3.7]: xorg-xmag: updated to version 1.0.8
<frinnst> oh I dont know
<uwumeowmeownyaa> This seems to be a good solution. Very UNIX-way.
<frinnst> uwumeowmeownyaa: pkgadd et-al does not know of dependencies. prt-get does, It acts as a frontend
<frinnst> slava ukraini btw

<remiliascarlet> uwumeowmeownyaa: So you hate BSD, but you like UNIX? Speaking of double standards...
<uwumeowmeownyaa> BSD is cuck-licensed and UNIX-way philosophy is not.
<remiliascarlet> Sounds like you fell for the Luke Smith meme.
