<arnd> linusw__: I see you did a bit of gpio descriptor work on arch/arm/mach-s3c/mach-crag6410.c, which is currently scheduled for removal in early 2024 according to arch/arm/mach-s3c/Kconfig.s3c64xx
<linusw__> Yeah :/ no other way, I think Mark wants to keep the associated codec drivers.
<arnd> actually I just noticed the comment says after 2024, so probably early 2025
<linusw__> Yeah it's a bit of digging a hole and then filling it in again sometimes it feels like :/
<linusw__> Do you have some idea if we're gonna be able to merge the EP93xx rework for v6.8?
<arnd> I mixed up the dates there. I was planning to go through all known unused drivers and remove them after the board is gone since that has half the platform_data definitions of all of arch/arm/, but I should probably do that just for the ones that are already unused now
<arnd> I keep hoping ep93xx will be ready, but haven't looked closely at what is still missing there
<linusw__> I think some of the patches are already queued in some subtrees, I'm certainly ready to merge the pin control bits if they can be queued independently...
<arnd> I really just wanted to take the ep93xx patches in summer already, given that the new code is a huge improvement over the existing version, but there are always new comments about further issues with the bindings

<arnd> what what I remember, at least some of the driver changes in that series are interdependent on the full DT conversion and can't be easily merged.

<arnd> linusw__: do you know if anyone is still looking at DT conversion for other platforms? I was hoping to see some more work get done for at least omap1 and orion5x, have not seen any patches for those. I think there was also some interest in attempting more conversion of pxa, sa1100 and footbridge, but I never really expected those to happen
iivanov_ has quit []
<linusw__> OMAP1 has active users so I think it's sad that they don't get around to fix it up. I have prepared the ground for all the GPIO so drivers will mostly work outofthebox wrt that.
<linusw__> What I heard is that people are a bit intimidated by the work of device tree bindings since we raised the bar with schema.
<linusw__> This is maybe a bit unfortunate. We didn't mean for that to slow down DT adaption of older systems :/

<arnd> linusw__: yes, active users was the point here, orion5x also has them at least on https://github.com/1000001101000/Debian_on_Buffalo
<tmlind> yeah i doubt anybody can spend much effort on omap1 dt conversion unfortunately.. the clocks, system timers and gpios should be ready to go however
<javierm> linusw__: if anything I would had thought that schema would make it easier since in the past one had to write a free form binding and there wasn't much of a guideline on how to do it right
<tmlind> the schema stuff is only trivial when using the basics, best to try to stick to basics

<tmlind> i'm also a bit worried about the mixing of code and content with yaml stuff

<tmlind> however, in the omap1 case i don't think the bindings are the issue for dt conversion though, it's just the amount of time one needs to spend on doing it

<ukleinek> abelloni: while cleaning up my mailbox I stubled over https://lore.kernel.org/linux-rtc/20231002082743.2537954-1-u.kleine-koenig@pengutronix.de

<arnd> ukleinek, abelloni: Ack on that. It looks like he stopped sending Acks to patches around the same time he stopped being CEO of his company and took a job at Apple: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alessandrozummo/
<arnd> the company website appears to still be around, but it's not clear if he's even associated with it, or if any email makes it his way

<krzk> can we have a policy that if maintainer is not active after 2 years, we unconditionally remove the entry/address from maintainers?
<krzk> Stale maintainer entries are a bit of problem, because they hide information whether subsystem needs help, has a bus-factor or is even orphaned.
<krzk> Plus, we want new fresh blood of maintainers, but potential candidates might see that it's crowded there so why proposing their candidacy for maintainership of subsystem?
<geertu> krzk: Just make sure not to remove the wrong Ale{ss,x}andr[eo] ;-)

<broonie> Not active after people try to contact them, there's people who look after drivers that don't need many updates
<geertu> Yeah, people sometimes mix up "maintainer is unresponsive" with "driver is working perfectly"...
<krzk> broonie: geertu: true, but I have trouble applying this logic to an active subsystem :)
<krzk> individual drivers anyway don't have maintainers in the same meaning but rather point of contact for reviews or someone who cares
