What firmware blobs can one live without on the imx8m...? Not going to need hdmi, vpu, etc. Finding the ddr4 firmware blob thingies a bit hilarious.
<milkylainen_>
Why would you need _ddr4_ mc firmware blobs? Timing has never been an overly hard exercise, neither is training?
<jn>
it's become harder with memory generations

jn: Sure. Not really an answer, but absolutely.
<milkylainen_>
The only issues I can see are hw vendors writing crap searches for dynamic levelling calculation.

i'd still like the ddr4 initialization to be openly-specified and open-source-implemented, but i can see why it exists at all
<Esmil>
arnd: Greg pull the "serial: 8250_dw: Add StarFive JH7100 quirk" patch into tty-testing, so I guess I should leave that out when sending the JH7100 series to the soc tree right?
<Esmil>
I'm still waiting for Palmer to ack the riscv bits though
<arnd>
Esmil: yes, sounds good
<arnd>
Esmil: you could also leave a duplicate of that patch in your branch if that is the only thing that stands between a booting and a non-booting kernel for your pull request
<arnd>
We normally try to avoid duplicating commits, but having a known-working state in the submission is more valuable
<Esmil>
Ah, ok. I'll leave it then because otherwise the console will break when the real serial driver is probed

<ardb>
i left linaro 2,5 years ago so that seems reasonable
<zx2c4>
Oh :-P
<zx2c4>
Well, anyway, I mention it because I assume that the CC is not making it to you
<ardb>
but thanks for the head's uup :-)
<ardb>
my other email address was cc'ed as well
<zx2c4>
Ah okay
<ardb>
actually it wasn't
<zx2c4>
I dont see that but maybe you got it by way of linux-crypto
<ardb>
how weird
<ardb>
yeah it was a ML cc that brought it to my mailbox, and my filters kept it from being filed right away
<zx2c4>
bingo
<ardb>
in any case, i received it, thanks
<zx2c4>
👍
<ardb>
surely, arnd had noticed me having left :-)
<zx2c4>
I assume his script pulled the CC out of the Fixes: line
<arnd>
right, I need to tell my script to use .mailmap for this
<arnd>
I now sent a reply without the old address
<zx2c4>
arnd: oh cool you're here
<zx2c4>
your rationale makes sense. I'll queue the patch up and send it out to dave today if that works for you
<zx2c4>
doing a quick x86_64 test now to look at the assembler
<arnd>
zx2c4: there is no rush, I don't think anyone else has noticed so far
<zx2c4>
alright, i'll hold off then
<arnd>
it might be good to add Cc:stable though, so this makes it into stable Android kernels once it's merged. They build with clang, and this could actually make a difference in battery life
<zx2c4>
trapping on clang-13 strikes me as a ~big deal indeed
<arnd>
zx2c4: I can check older clang versions quickly for reference, if you want. My guess is that this is not a new problem
<zx2c4>
oh, huh
<arnd>
yes, clang-10 is affected the same way, and older versions no longer build kernels, so I assume it's any clang version
<ardb>
arnd: when i sent the original patch, i could reproduce this with gcc
<ardb>
i.e., i could observe the LDM instructions in the code
<arnd>
ardb: any idea which gcc version?
<ardb>
but i did not check whether siphash() is ever called with misaligned input
<ardb>
arnd: don
<ardb>
't remember, whatever debian stable was carrying at the time, most probably
<arnd>
I see ldm used to load the key with both gcc and clang, but that should always be 32-bit word-aligned
<CounterPillow>
My i2s-tdm bugfix patch incorrectly uses the prefix "i2s_tdm" instead of "i2s-tdm" because I just grabbed it from the latest commit to that file, which was a patch that got it wrong :/ Doesn't feel like a good idea to send a v4 when I've already sent 3 versions due to silly mistakes like this.

<jn>
CounterPillow: some maintainers fix small things like that when they pick up a patch, if they notice the mistake
<CounterPillow>
in that case, attention broonie: ^
<broonie>
CounterPillow: if it’s just the subject line it doesn’t matter too much, the main thing is to have the subsystem at the start so I notice I need to review it
<CounterPillow>
Yeah, that one is correct. Phew.
<broonie>
Don’t need to resend for that alone.

<palmer>
Esmil: can you email me? I'm OOO, but I'll be back tonight. I'm sort of in the woods, so the internet isn't good
<Esmil>
palmer: you should be cc'ed on all the patches. do you want me to send them again just to you?
