mort: I would still guess it's a configuration problem. If you take the .config file from the working kernel, run 'make oldconfig' on it with the new one, and then run 'make oldconfig' a second time using the old kernel again, is that also broken?

bisecting a config file is usually quicker than bisecting a git history

But in general, I prefer git bisect ;-)

For bisecting over large ranges, I do "cp .config arch/<arch>/configs/bisect_defconfig" and do a "make bisect_defconfig" in every bisection step.

geertu: that seems slightly smarter than my approach of having a really long command line to copy the old .config to the object directory as part of the each build (along with olddefconfig modules zImage)
