[Discord] <lands39> this isn't about armbian but i feel like someone in here would know since i don't know much about arm, where can i find a generic android iso i can boot in qemu-system-arm? android x86 will not suffice
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> i can't find any arm images anywhere, and third party android releases need you to build stuff which is too complicated and time consuming for me, not to mention i don't really have the hardware or space to do this
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Not sure if anyone can answer this since Armbian has nothing in common with android.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> both are arm and i figured someone might know since its arm
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> there *isn’t* a generic android afaik
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> do you know of anything i can use in qemu then?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> AOSP is the closest you’ll get, but you’d probably still need to work with the HAL
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> so i'm guessing this isn't something i can just download and use
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> arm is weird and complicated
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> yeah there's no download here
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> only links to shit that needs a chrome plugin
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> there is for me, scroll past the Android Flash Tool section, `aosp_arm64-exp-BP22.250124.010-13116449-d8b17b85.zip` is probably what you’re after
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> `aosp_arm64-exp-AP4A.241205.013-12621605-14e72a7c.zip` if you want the latest “stable”

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> hopefully this has something i can boot and install from, i'll find out in 10 minutes
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i’ll also try, worth a punt
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> would download arm windows to test the vm and make sure everything's good but microsoft doesn't let me download stuff
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> don't know why, just doesn't
LanDi has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> They don't like it when you try downloading stuff from then not using windows. Had the same issue. Kind a schizophrenic that you need windows to download windows lol
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Maybe should have faked browser agent or something
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i build my arm64 isos myself, because theirs don't *work*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> they allow downloads on macOS though, i've got an iso if necessary
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> im using windows
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> this is gonna take longer
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> i can't get usb to work in qemu
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> Error: no usb bus to attach usbdevice
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> oh is this generic debian?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> yeah
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> yeah that should boot/run fine, i don't think Android will though
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> i *have* found their bootloader, there's even a build specifically for qemu, but i've never managed to *use* a qemu bootloader bin
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> I did... and I think I'm inclining one way...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> For the room. What I want is a "simple" and "cheap" (as possible) sbc to play videos, with at least/most 4k (30 fps is ok, 60 is a plus) hardware decoding for h265 and h264... I would go with something like an Orange Pi Zero or a Raspberry Pi Zero, even if Raspbian support is not platinum. But I really want emmc instead of sd card, and I want full size HDMI instead of mini or micro.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> A CM Could work but with a standard base board it's the same size and setup as a "normal" sbc, and we don't have the budget and time to design our own to application host board.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> So I'm leaning heavily towards the Khadas Edge 2
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> don’t hate me for saying this, but an Intel-based mini-PC would *probably* work better
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> The only thing is... I have never heard of Khadas before (this is probably MY bad) and I wonder how long running they are. As in. Will I be able to find and buy them for a while from today? 🙂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> Hmmm but I need sbc size. So stuff like MiniITX is already too large, and when i was a kid and I looked at intel based pc104 or other SBC style things they always seemed either too expensive and industrial, or too "hacky"... But I'll look around
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> I was thinkign anything rk3588 would be stable enough.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> Lenovo ThinkCentre too big? they’re basically SBCs in a case
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> In fact simpler/leaner Rockchips would probably work well for this. It's not a high load, but many moons ago around here I was told the VPU in the 3588 was kinda the stablest/best supported.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> I'll check. but if I'm sincere, orange/raspberry 5 is already pushing the size boundary 🙂 I would go with Zeros if I could
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> *why?*
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> Why would I? size
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> why does size matter so much?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lands39> wife approval
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> Instalations not only have limitations but they're better if succint. This is normally grappled onto projector mounts.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> if ThinkCentre tiny is too big, there is ThinkCentre nano, or the myriad of weird industrial ones, is this for a production deployment?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> I'll check them. Why are you suggesting an Intel over an ARM?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> because ARM is currently a weird mess of proprietary blobs and video playback can be finicky at the best of times
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> Ok.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> Though in my limited experience with intel in cpu gpu video decoding hasn't been without issues. Specially around tearing and sync
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> I'll check those thincentres to see
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <speakertomeat> It's true that Intel has been getting more serious about their in cpu gpus for a while
