<DC-IRC> <bret> Bit of a random question but what would people say is the "best" supported TV box with Armbian? Or are they much the same?
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> well depends on how you define "supported"... (they aren't, AFAIK)
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> but say `rk322x-box` receives a lot of love from Jock, quite regularly..
<DC-IRC> <bret> Yeah maybe my "" should have been around supported instead of best 😄
<DC-IRC> <bret> debating whether to grab one of these cheap tv boxes and see how they compare when you ditch android just for a simple blog post but I don't want to spend days and days trying to hack things together

<DC-IRC> <rpardini> well I'd say `rk322x-box`, the Amlogic's might work as well, and I hear good things about the Inovato Quadra as well (Allwinner)
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> _not affiliated or endorsing any of those though_ don't get me banned 😉
<DC-IRC> <bret> I guess I'm actually being a bit lazy and should do a bit more research when I finish work heh. I think ultimately I'm just hoping for something relatively up to date that can just be flashed and everything "works" just for a simple comparison piece. Though that depends on how expensive the better models are
<DC-IRC> <bret> Reminded me that I had a note to do something like this a while ago when I saw a $19 TV box on AliExpress earlier. That was only 1GB RAM though, once you go up to 2/4GB I imagine there's no competition vs something like the Le Potato or similar as an overall package
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> Yeah and the worse part is that you never know what you're getting with tvboxes. I've seen the same "model" (t95z) be sold with a rockchip, amlogic, _and_ allwinner SoC inside. So you'll need to buy it, open it, hook up UART, determine wtf it actually is, and then start a chase that might very well end up nowhere. If you make it work, and buy a 2nd one from the same vendor / same <clipped message>
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> model, it might end up being completely different. So 🤷‍♂️
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> it's juse useless comparing, since readers wouldn't be able to reproduce the experiment, lets say.

<DC-IRC> <bret> Yeah, it's a bit of a wild west. This listing states RK3228A but the more I actually look into it, the more I realise that's a waste of time and money
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> This has some nice model examples inside as well -- _never connect_ any of those boxes to your network -- https://www.humansecurity.com/hubfs/HUMAN_Report_BADBOX-and-PEACHPIT.pdf
<DC-IRC> <bret> After all of the boards I've got and worked with, you'd think I'd be good at spotting time/money sinks at this point 😅
<DC-IRC> <bret> Ah yes 😄 I've got plans to have a better isolated separate network for even the SBC testing. I've been very trusting of vendor images thus far
<DC-IRC> <bret> thanks for the link though, I'd seen a couple of higher level pieces but this is quite interesting
<DC-IRC> <rpardini> @bret check your DM's / friend request
