<jorropo> Hey I need some help, I have a really weird issue, on my VisionFive2 only half of the ram shows up.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> It is supposed to be an 8Gb model but can only see 4. Never seen this before except with a poorly sited ram stick, but this has soldered on ram.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> This isn't some weird caching setup that armbian does right ? Sounds like a defect.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ```console
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> # free -m -h
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> total used free shared buff/cache available

<tenkawa42> @jorropo still around? I can help with that
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Its a dts known issue
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> you have to modify the dts src code and rebuild the dtb to get all the ram to show up.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Its fortunately about a 5 minute procedure

<tenkawa42> If you are using Starfive's images.. update to their newest and it should have the update (at leaast from what I'm reading)... I manually update and have a custom build .
<yang2>
tenkawa42 which OS do you have on Starfive 2?

<tenkawa42> Armbian has no "supported/current" image and no current maintainer... if you are talking about the Aug 31 image that is an unsupported likely to not work correctly image
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I'm pulling it to see how it was even built
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> yang2: my own Debian build
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I just downloaded starfive's image
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> but I have booting issue:
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ```
<DC-IRC>

<tenkawa42> dd/etcher the sdcard.img file to a microsd
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> and boot it
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> Yeah I etchered it
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (make sure you have the dip switches right though)
buzzmarshall has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> The VF2 has 2 dip switches that need to be set
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> oh true, they are how I left them (which is wrong according to the docs I'm trying to boot on spi but it wouldn't boot on sdcard yesterday without it)
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> and now I can hate myself because I just installed poe hat and need to unscrew it to unbury the dip switches
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> ouch... too bad you don't have a gpio extender
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ok with dip switches I can see attempts to boot in uart
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> One combo should be the right one... (I don't have mine sitting beside me anymore... it was for weeks, i finally moved it into my server room)
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> the silk screen thankfully has the table and labels for the whole thing
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> hehehe
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I boot from nvme now so it makes it easy
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> can you do that ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> once you get the firmware updated yes
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I need to boot linux on the spi and then do a handoff ?
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ohhhh I'll do that after then
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> One word of advice I have though... keep a small blank microsd handy... It has a mmc spin condition issue currently not fixed... I found a workaround for it by just populating the microsd slot..
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> got 8 GiB of ram using starfive's img thanks
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I had a very similar issue on the PBP backthen.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> GPU wouldn't start *sometimes* unless I have an sdcard plugged in.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> otherwise your load average if you ever do run nvme will sit around .6 minimum at idle
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> w ? cpu ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> yeah load avg
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> is that 0.6% or 60% ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> neither
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> .6 cpu load
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> cpu is measured in a *cpu
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> yeah so 60%
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> not really
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> as in 100% = 1 core of usage
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I'm a htop user, I'm not used to fractional cpu mesurements
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> htop do the exact same thing but *100
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> it is useable cpu but it throws off the numbers
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> thats why I say the % isn't valid in this context
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I'm not getting it sorry
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> You still have idle cpu... but it doesn't show it that way
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> and now I realised the starfive image doesn't have a package manager
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> dpkg isn't there?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> or apt?
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> no
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> no
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> it also runs on 5.15 which is a bit old for me
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> 5.15 is all you are getting unless you know how to build mainline development
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (which I am currently doing)
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I've built linux and debootstrap before. Their readme have good docs, sounds Ilike I give it a try.
junaid_ has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> No... what I'm saying is you have to do a mainline kernel based on a development effort.. Its not in production yet
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> There is no prebuilt (unless Ubuntu perhaps has built one)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> The rest of the os is the easy part (in my opinion)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> checking ubuntu's release now
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> the patches aren't upstreamed ? So I would need to collect them and merge them with the newer release ?
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> Anyway thx for your help, all the ram correctly shows up now
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> np.. Here's the most current repo from the mainline devs
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> I'm expecting to plugin some spi peripherals, have them fail to work, ping you and have you walk me through replacing the crystal oscilators 😄
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> actually wouldn't make sense since spi is master driven
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> that's the update procedure.... get the sdcard image from the first link and use it and throw those firmware files on it and that will save you a lot of tme
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> that's the update procedure.... get the sdcard image from the first link and use it and throw those firmware files on it and that will save you a lot of time
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> ok thx
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> its configured to be able to talk to the mtd properly
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> > You can either use the vendor U-Boot:
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> > - VisionFive2 Software v2.11.5 is known to work.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> > - VisionFive2 Software v3.6.1 is not compatible.
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> what about 3.7 and later ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> so you can just wget/curl/etc those updates to your written image
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> @tenkawa42 do you have a github or kofi ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> well that was annoying... Discord crashed
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> they work for Debian just fine
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> [1:21 PM]
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> good q... I'm not sure since I don't use Ubuntu but I'm using them so I'd "assume" those all work since you will be updating with a prebuilt image.... after that.. the u-boot goes with the image
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> and it "does" work with the most recent firmware
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I am using the most recent on both my units here
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> if I want to boot of ssd
<DC-IRC>
<jorropo> once I updated the bootloader I can just dd the sdcard image onto the nvme shutdown, remove sdcard and reboot ?
