<gambl0r> @speakertomeat You might try building an image or finding a very recent image that uses the edge kernel (6.3.*), I'm running a self built lunar minimal package which I've then added wayland+kde etc. Unfortunately I don't have a 4k monitor to test with, but it performs very well at 1080p. The reason it works on android so easily is because it's a mobile gpu chip, designed for mobile
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Hmm I could try. I wonder if I can backport 6.3 to this new bookworm install
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Or build a bookworm+6.3 image
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Thanks gambl0r
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> no worries, I did try a few bookworm builds current and edge, but I find the ubuntu images to perform slightly better
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> the difference between the last armbian supported jammy build and this new lunar build is immense, performance wise
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> btw its usually more the kernel than the distrib that's the problem in this area.....
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> using 6.3 is really pushing it a bit much
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> usually, though software/libs come in to play
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> like if I install ffmpeg, it will break gpu acceleration in chromium
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yes.. but the "concerns" are usually working or not
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> The way I see it in this instance is that the newer the kernel, the more fixes for the platform are included (hopefully)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I agree on that however the distro is still not "specific"
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Bad assumption
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> logically seems correct
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Newer kernels (6.1 was a very good example) showed the exact opposite
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> 6.1 was a disaster
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (still is tp be honesy)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (still is tp be honest)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (still is to be honest)
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> I'm referring to 6.1 vs 6.3
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> in this case
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> 6.3 should have better support in theory
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> 6.3 is not a LTS
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> it's not RC either
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (at least not yet been made one.. they could change their mind)
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> anyhow, try both kernels if you like and see what you see
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> no... you need to read the kernel lifecycle... at some point soon 6.3 will go EOL... 6.1 will be around for several years longer
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> I don't think I do, I just try what's current at the time to see how well it works
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> 6.1 has an established date of at least Ends in 3 years and 6 months
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (31 Dec 2026)
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> current and edge will move like they always do
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> and when there is a 6.4 build available or whatever armbian decides to move to, I'll try that too
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Interesting, but given the project nature I think I preffer lts systems, and kernels rather than lots of performance, I've even set the default governor to powersave
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> it's a personal preference and needs based thing I get it
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> This device's job is to play videos only, 24/7
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> then you want to make sure that whatever you use has proper hardware gpu decoding
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Yup
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> I did notice that while decoding 1080p h264 via gpu, it still uses some cpu but safer than all software
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> cpu melts
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> yes I need to do propper tests with vdpau vs va, or through gl.
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> you'll get it, I don't know about 4k though
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> I'm actually using an orange pi 4 lts with 16gb emmc and 3gb ram as a desktop system right now and it's amazing
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> on this lunar edge build
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> Which desktop environment on it?
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> wayland+plasma
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> This is the same but with 4gb ram
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> What distro?
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> armbian lunar
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Lunar is... ubuntu?
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> minimal
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> yes
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Ok
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> How much work was it to configure Wayland and plasma?
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> none really, just a few semi strategic apt installs
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> it's so nice, I highly recommend
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Anyhow a non lts distro or very current ubuntu should be on par with bookworm which has finally upgraded us to the newest kde after so long.... I want it on my desktop so bad (I'm on bullseye still) but I'm too busy for my complicated upgrade process
<DC-IRC>
<terrorpup> me too
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> Might have to try it on my pinebookpro
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> do it, you won't regret it
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> And I'll try it on my laptop which is easier to upgrade, and on a lts ubuntu already
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> so clean, so snappy
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Specially my laptop, since it's a 3 in 1 (lenovo yoga) and one thing plasma on x11 doesn't deal well with is auto rotate, and on screen keyboard
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> We've been promissed improvements with wayland
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> But older plasma doesn't play with wayland so well
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> just one thing I'm missing is the 'About' menu in systemsettings, anyone know how to enable/install it?
<DC-IRC>
<terrorpup> Guys, any chance i3 on Debian?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I "think" Rich is workng on it but don't quote me
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I "think" Rich is working on it but don't quote me
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> Pieces are there in an untested state at this point
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> pretty sure that's most of it
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> and remove pipewire if it got installed otherwise there will be no audio devices in kde
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Oh audio! thanks for reminding me
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Ah yes, I see why my "output both to 3.5mm and hdmi" config failed.....
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> there is hiss on the 3.5mm output though
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> I bet alsa doesn't read the config in /etc/asournd.config
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> on mine anyway, with headphones plugged in high volume
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Sigh i need to stop working when extremely tired....
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> mate, it's 11am 🙂
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Thats why my best time to do stuff on here is 6 am.....
<DC-IRC>
<terrorpup> Seem Audio is an issue with all RK3588, doesn't matter if it's Radxa/Indiedroid/OrangePi
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I'm an extreme morning person though anyway
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> @terrorpup we are talking rk3399 atm but yeah, no doubt there are many audio issues across many boards
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> On one hand it's good to know lots of people here are on the eastern side of the world... on the other 😄
<DC-IRC>
<terrorpup> Sorry, I will keep quiet
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Oh I'm an extreme morning hater person so 😄
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I'm in the states... 9 PM here
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> lol, that's not what I meant at all
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> I'm south of you, and directly south it seems, though I still am unsure how your daylight stuff works. All I know is I hate it since I'll have to build a broken ntp server for it
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Hope you've had better weather than us....
<DC-IRC>
<terrorpup> Tonight in Atlanta we are having one Hell of lighting show
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Eh yes and no. Weeks of heat. Lots of heat. Not TX or KY levels of heat (I have friends and family in both) but still
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Thats been here (storms) on and off for last 2 days.. more coming tonight
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Yeah, a friend is just having a very bad time on KY because of it
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah Ohio here
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> so I hear ya
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Urgh it's asound.conf
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Time to eat dinner and rest the brain
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> See you all.
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> And thanks for the feedback

<Tonymac32> where is this set? I found
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> if test "${console}" = "display" | | test "${console}" = "both"; then setenv consoleargs "console=tty1"; fi
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> if test "${console}" = "serial" | | test "${console}" = "both"; then setenv consoleargs "console=ttyS2,1500000 ${consoleargs}"; fi
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> which seems like a logic problem, but I'm not a shells cript guy
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> or a bootscript guy as this would be
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> You set it ultimately in armbjanEnv.txt
<DC-IRC>
<monkablyat> armbjanEnv.txt the good old swedish ikea fork version
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> Ja!
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> It works fine with other images. Probably initramfs logs print to S2 and you can't see output because of you can't pass initramfs stage
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> So. I guess since there's no grub and no stuff here, changing kernels is special.... oh wait... there's no legacy for 3399? so I'm "stuck" with 6.1
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> Legacy, *shudders in revulsion*
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> The issue is almost certainly that there's no real maintainer so some stuff has gotten lost patch wise
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> I can't say for sure, I'm also not in a place to test it/work in it at present
<DC-IRC>
<spooky8086> It looks like the NanoPC T6 is now being sold with a SPI NOR chip, can anyone confirm if /dev/mtdblock0 is shown? Might need to add a sfc node to the device tree.
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> My unit has it, but I'm not certain it's the production model. I believe it is. It is physically on the board, I havent added it to my mainline device tree yet
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @efectn is that mainline or vemdor kernel?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @efectn is that mainline or vendor kernel?
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> mainline
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @efectn my goal is to take 2 Rock5's and see how few things are needed to add from kernel.org.... Its one of my various random experiments
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I'm trying to find the "minimal" needed changes
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (Working on a headless server build)
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> i grabbed several patches from patchwork
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah I'm figuring I'll need some... the hope is not too many..
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> i added 15 😄 there are also some patches from collabora to make pcie, usb2, usb3 work
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> i added 15 😄 there are also some patches from collabora to make pcie, sata, usb2, usb3 work
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> i think we should use 6.5-rc1 when it's released
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah its looking like 6.5 will have a lot merged...
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> yeah lots of good support for all the things, but as far as I can tell there's been no additional progress on the PCIE3 patchset... as that was done by somebody else and not from Sebastain Racheil
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> @efectn are you using mainline or collabora uboot? or vendor?
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> vendor
<DC-IRC>
<Tonymac32> I want to start working with the mainline, we'll see now that I have the T6 at least booting
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> mainline seems quitely experimental right now
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> shutdown doesn't work properly as i saw
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> shutdown doesn't work properly as i've seen
<DC-IRC>
<minervarhatesthepi> I solved my pbp problema by replacing the emmc. Now my pbp is breathing bleeding edge mainline from the emmc again
<DC-IRC>
<minervarhatesthepi> This sandisk batch is giving problems
<DC-IRC>
<minervarhatesthepi> I took some pics but will takke more tomorrow
<DC-IRC>
<lanefu> as it reboot fails, or just doesn't halt?
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> It reboots instead
* DC-IRC
<lanefu> good enough
<DC-IRC>
<.richn> ok well kde works and is nice but having issues with it using the xdg like it should
<DC-IRC>
<.richn> just got home. tomorrow I will figure out the xdg once done we will be good to get things rolling
