<drozdziak1[m]> Tl;dr: is the EOS S3 worth getting for a beginner?
<drozdziak1[m]> Hi! What's the best board to get right now for trying Amaranth? The board Def repo looks rather busy and I don't have fpga experience. Other than support from this project, I think I'd love if the vendor weren't too much of a closed-source proprietary silly goober. Thank you!
<drozdziak1[m]> I just noticed there's more FOSS toolchain boards, which one is the Best™?

<zyp[m]> <drozdziak1[m]> "I just noticed there's more FOSS..." <- I don't think there's any objectively best boards, it's a question of what's best suited for a given purpose
<drozdziak1[m]> Truth be told the purpose is not clear to me, I'd say the purpose could be easiest barrier to entry
<drozdziak1[m]> (I'm just curious about fpgas I guess)
<zyp[m]> I suspect icebreaker might be the one with the most examples for
<zyp[m]> (not counting glasgow, since that's intended as a tool and not a devboard)
<zyp[m]> personally I'm more a fan of ecp5 than ice40, both since it's a more capable fpga and has less silly restrictions, in which case maybe the orangecrab is a good beginner board
<zyp[m]> the colorlight series of boards (repurposed LED screen controllers) are the absolutely cheapest, and the ecpix-5 is a pretty decent and capable one

<Wanda[cis]> drozdziak1: do NOT get anything with quicklogic chips, they're total garbage
<Wanda[cis]> go for either ice40 or ecp5
<drozdziak1[m]> Aight

<antoinevg[m]> <zyp[m]> "I suspect icebreaker might be..." <- I got started with the LFE5u-85F version of https://www.crowdsupply.com/radiona/ulx3s -- lots of user pins, lots of peripherals, plays nicely with the Amaranth ecosystem out the box, unless you're doing SERDES there's very little you won't be able to do with this board.
