caleb: how goes
<caleb>
pretty fun, been taking this time off to work on personal projects and fix up our house
<adam12>
caleb: Ah nice. You've only been in that house a few weeks now?
<caleb>
yeah bought it a week before I got the boot lol
<adam12>
caleb: Nice, and not nice. Heh.
<caleb>
which to be fair, is very nice of them, lender probably would've backed out with that
<caleb>
if they had done it earlier
<caleb>
I have another job 95% lined up, but if it doesn't work out I'm fairly certain I'm just gonna ramp up my moonlighting gigs to full time contracts
<caleb>
I don't know if I can handle working as an employee again anywhere but the place I have setup
<adam12>
I've been consulting full time since 2012 so I fully understand.
<adam12>
I'm not sure how I'd do as an employee, tho I am considering it in 2023... just as a change of pace.

Hi I am trying to install Ruby 3.0 using rvm and I keep getting an error during the compile stage. https://pastebin.com/rbfPLpHk
<ruby[bot]>
blaster: we in #ruby do not like pastebin.com, it loads slowly for most, has ads which are distracting and has terrible formatting. Please use https://gist.github.com

Hey all, I am a relatively new dev (less than 1 year) and I am really interested in the open source community and working on some projects that are ongoing. That being said I sort of have a hard time finding projects that I feel like I can really work on with my current skill set. I just thought I would try to get in touch here and see if there was anyone working on a project that they could use some new devs on that they would be able to really work
<stirl>
with and mentor a bit.
<stirl>
I would be really excited to be a part of a project, I just feel like I need some help getting going.
<adam12>
stirl: imho, see a need, fill a need.
<adam12>
stirl: This is kind of like side-projects/side-gigs. Don't just make up something, but rather, find a need and then fill it. Start with the libraries you already use. Can they use better docs? (hint: near ever OSS project needs better docs).
<adam12>
blaster: You'll want to create a paste for this file: /home/redstar/.rvm/log/1671143747_ruby-3.0.0/make.log
<blaster>
adam12, I already removed rvm, I am new to ruby and it was angering me thoroughly
<blaster>
Going to try with rbenv and see if it happens
<adam12>
blaster: Linux?
<blaster>
Ubuntu 22.04
<adam12>
blaster: rbenv does have weird stuff around shims, but is generally very very good. The ruby builder it ships with is very nice. You should be in a good place with it.
<blaster>
Would you recommend installing it through brew or using apt?
<adam12>
blaster: You're using linuxbrew?
<blaster>
Yessir
<adam12>
blaster: I've never used it, but I _presume_ it has a quicker update cycle than apt. Which is likely what you want, so I'd go with brew.
<blaster>
ok thank you
<adam12>
My guess is you ran into an openssl issue. the ruby builder for rbenv (ruby-build?) will install and compile the correct version for you, which is nice.
<blaster>
i believe that rings a bell from my google searching i just did not pursue it
<adam12>
Gotta put kids to bed. Good luck!
<blaster>
Ok thank you for the help
<stirl>
adam12: Thank you for a tip on the firstrubyfriend.org, that looks like a great program! I have tried writing some documentation but I have to admit I didn't try very hard. I will re-investigate that at your suggestion though
<blaster>
just improve some tests lol at least youre writing code then

I keep getting Try running `apt-get install -y libssl-dev` to fetch missing dependencies. after rbenv install but I already have that package.
<blaster>
I dont really want to compile and run openssl 1.x, I'm not trying to use ruby < 3.1 either
