cfbolz changed the topic of #pypy to: #pypy PyPy, the flexible snake https://pypy.org | IRC logs: https://quodlibet.duckdns.org/irc/pypy/latest.log.html#irc-end and https://libera.irclog.whitequark.org/pypy | the pypy angle is to shrug and copy the implementation of CPython as closely as possible, and staying out of design decisions

<mjacob> mgorny: out of interest, what does the python 3.9 removal involve and why does it affect the pypy3 package?
<mgorny> it means we're not going to build Gentoo packages for cpython 3.9 anymore, so any issues specific to python3.9 we'll be hitting only on pypy3
<mgorny> (and then someone will come complaining "how dare you stop supporting cpython 3.9 when you still support pypy3.9)
<LarstiQ> do you generally supports multiple python versions, or is switching 3.9 for 3.10?
<cfbolz> mgorny: we're definitely making progress on 3.10 (though slower than I hoped)
<mgorny> LarstiQ: multiple but it's costly on dev time
<mgorny> right now 3.9 + 3.10 + 3.11 + pypy3
<mgorny> plus we're keeping cpython 3.8 but without package support
<mgorny> imagine running some long-running test suite for 4 interpreters, and pytest is sometimes slow on pypy3 too
<mgorny> we'd like to get rid of 3.9 before 3.12 comes in
<mgorny> (we support only one version of pypy3 though)
<mgorny> (and treat it as rolling)

<mattip> mgorny: we probably will not have a release before May 1
<mattip> I think we are more than 1 month away, given the open milestones, failing tests, and slow progress
<mattip> mgorny: do you have an indication how many people are using the pypy3 provided by gentoo?
<mgorny> i'm afraid not, we don't have any stats
<mgorny> there are pypy-related submissions sometimes though, so someone is using it ;-)
<mattip> ok
<mgorny> probably just for fun, though
<mgorny> we experimented with running portage on pypy3 but got varying results
<mgorny> sometimes it was much faster, sometimes it was slower than cpython
