hello, i'm quite new to openscad and i'm trying to make a rounded hook with rounded edges. I used rotate_extrude (with a 160 degree angle) on a polygon (to make a flat rectangle) to make this work, but now the end of the hook is flat.
<jorian>
how would i go about making that end rounded like the rest?

jorian I'm not fully able to visualise what you have done, can you share your model on https://paste.debian.net/ or similar?
<jorian>
it might not be possible what i want, but if there's a better way i'm all ears
<Scopeuk>
so you want the "rounded edge" across all the cut end of the hook?
<jorian>
yes
<jorian>
i can imagine blood on the floor if i don't :)
WeyounDax[m] has quit [Quit: You have been kicked for being idle]
<Scopeuk>
I think your options would either be to add on the rounded bit, probably hull 4 spheres which match up with what you did on the shape and position it at the end, or create the rough shape (hard edges all around) and run minkowski over the full shape with a sphere
WeyounDax[m] has joined #openscad
WeyounDax[m] has left #openscad [#openscad]
<Scopeuk>
also fn = 90 on a sphere with minkowski will slow down render heavily, that is a lot of faces
<jorian>
yes, it was a bit slow, and was experimenting a bit. it didn't seem to have much effect in prusaslicer, so i will change that definitely
<Scopeuk>
it will likely be slow, particularly with big face counts
LordOfBikes_ has joined #openscad
<Scopeuk>
https://paste.debian.net/1269070/ does the operations (I took out your fa/fs/fn calls to reduce the runtime for playing with it
<guso78>
my path_extrude will not output an self-intersection object, but it has a parammeter allow_intersect to override.
<jorian>
ahh, nice, i got it working. thanks for the help, didn't think it would be so easy

will propose path_extrude soon. using path_extrude a hook can be done with a single command(corners of the path can be sharp or arbritary rounded)
kintel has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<jorian>
a hook like mine?
ur5us has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<guso78>
yes, there will only be a square for the profile, a path_extrude and a finlal minkowki for the roundings

I'm thinking of writing a comment on that path-extrude PR, but I don't really know enough about the problem to analyze a proposed solution. I just know that smart people have thought about it a lot and haven't come up with a complete solution. It would be helpful if somebody who *has* explored that space would describe the key problems. Any proposed built-in solution should have clear answers to those problems. Ideally they would
<JordanBrown[m]>
be *good* answers, but at a minimum they need to be *explainable* answers; we need to be able to document what will and will not work, how problem cases will behave, and what the modeler should do to avoid problem cases.

haha WP functional programming: More recently it has found use in niches such as parametric CAD in the OpenSCAD language built on the CGAL framework, although its restriction on reassigning values (all values are treated as constants) has led to confusion among users who are unfamiliar with functional programming as a concept

guso78: Alas, as I said, I'm not the right person to analyze your work. I'm hoping that some of the people who *have* done work there will give you concrete problem cases to consider.
<InPhase>
J2343: That wikipedia editor is "not wrong", although "some users got confused in this forum post" wouldn't be top of my list of important epochs in the history of functional programming. :)
<InPhase>
But, that's a very wikipedia sort of content entry there.
