zapb_: hi! I have posted something on mailing list. There are many projects that have mandatory dependencies, like OpenOCD wrt jimtcl. This does not mandates using submodules. I think it was just simpler for building OpenOCD with it's dependencies

Yes, it was much simpler and back then jimtcl wasn't available in many distros.
