<Haohmaru> how do you design a new thing with unfamiliar chips in the situation of IC shortage >:(
<Haohmaru> i can't tell what parts to choose, which ones are out of stock cuz they suck, and which ones are legit but out of stock due to the shortage

<antto> yeah, am i the only one struggling with that or is there some secret trick i'm unaware of
<olerem> antto: are you about chip shortage and no choice?
<antto> ^ that was me earlier
<antto> so yes..
<antto> i don't even know what kinds of ICs are affected.. i'm needing not just new MCUs but also new switching regulators and sh*t, and seeing flat zeros stock at octopart everywhere is like.. wtf's going on
<olerem> antto: i have no answer, only same problem. Yes, there are other chips, but bringin software support on same level adds overhead. If the price to wait for the possible available new chip is higer, then is is cheaper to go the other chip
<olerem> antto: well, most of IC are made in asia
<olerem> should i continue? :D
<antto> i'm not too flexible at changing between chips..
<antto> talking about mcus particularly
<olerem> no one is flexipble, most expensive part of most products is SW
<olerem> there is limited number of companies printing IC
<antto> yes.. so i'm looking at a particular cortex M chip that i'm familiar with, and also its neighbour variants which have the same peripherals (so i can reuse the code i have already)
<antto> but stock is 0 on most things i've checked in the last days
<olerem> well, if vendor A made product with some peripherals, then you can find same peripherals only by the same vendor
<antto> now i was looking at some new regulators because i need slightly more Amps than any of my familiar regulators can give, and again lots of options turn out to have 0 stock
<antto> yes, same vendor of course
<olerem> if vendor is affected by chip shortage, then all of this chips are affected. i least this would by me assumption

<c4017w> PaulFertser, so it's just for endianness compatibility, got it.
<c4017w> Is there a CMakeLists for OpenOCD? Or which IDE do you guys use?
<PaulFertser> c4017w: OpenOCD is using autotools for building.
<PaulFertser> c4017w: you can use any IDE you want for editing source code, I do not understand the question.
<c4017w> right, I got the building working
<c4017w> I mean for following refrences
<c4017w> It's annoying to manually search for where functions are defined, just wondering if I'm missing something
<PaulFertser> c4017w: for code comprehension you can use ctags with vim or etags with Emacs or whatever you normally use. OpenOCD is just a C language project.
<c4017w> I see. I guess each IDE has it's own way to search for references. Clion does it based on the CMakeLists
<ericonr> do "bear make" and you can use the compile_commands.json file with a bunch of IDEs

<c4017w> interesting, I'll try that
