does any of the hardware in the mt8195/mt8395 Kompanio/Genio 1200 require firmware blobs to be loaded in order to operate?

video encoder / decoder for one

that's fine, I don't need that; anything else?

IIRC, the scp and wifi/bt
09:36

what's the scp?

and yes, sorry, I'd have presumed wifi needed firmware, as it's not an ath9k :-)

scp is an embedded MCU. it drives the video stuff

I should have been more specific :-)

(apart from the video encoder/decoder and any wifi radios)

not sure this is the same SCP, anyway I wouldn't trust mediatek to use an opensource firmware without modifications :)

and the source for their SCP firmware isn't available?

that puts paid to that :-/

I wanted to use the Genio 1200 with Mali G57 MC5 over the less powerful Rockchip RK3576 with Mali G52 MC3

I'm wondering what "CrOS EC host command" is and whether a system would be functional without this blob being loaded?

there's also some SPM firmware that I don't know how it gets loaded on the Genio 1200

I've been emailing kholk and they said the system will run OK without the SCP firmware blob but alas, there's a DDR training blob in the bootloader which is required :-/
15:33
<
adomerle >
rah: Actually SCP (System Companion Processor) is not required. It is responsible for polling sensors in suspend mode to wake up the AP CPU. On MediaTek, SPM is responsible for power management, this is also a separate co-processor on a custom architecture. Its firmware is built directly into u-boot. It is responsible for power domains and much more (including lpddr training). TrustZone relies entirely on it and SMP (psci) will not work without...
