<FromGitter> <AndyObtiva> Hi, after taking a look at Crystal, my opinion is it is interesting as the right tool for the job only, but not as a replacement for Ruby (like some people think). I tend to use Java whenever I need higher performance static typing for some algorithms, and then I use that code form Ruby via JRuby because I prefer dynamically typed code most of the time for higher productivity (I don't buy into the benefits
<FromGitter> ... of static typing for correctness as I write tests and they catch type errors in dynamically typed languages anyways; static typing in my experience is only beneficial to achieve higher performance in some algorithms when needed in a few business app circumstances). I was hoping Crystal can go beyond Java by enabling me to w ... [https://gitter.im/crystal-lang/crystal?at=62bb659c1227f62be3e347c5]
<FromGitter> <Blacksmoke16> > What is the current status of writing Ruby extensions with Crystal? ⏎ ⏎ Pretty sure there is no effort being put towards this goal from the core devs at least. Best bet would prob be to pickup where the other guy left off and get it working again/build upon it
<FromGitter> <Blacksmoke16> so id say any progress towards this would have to be a community effort, as i dont think that is on the core roadmap or anything
<FromGitter> <Blacksmoke16> in regards to using Crystal over Java. I'm not sure of specific benchmarks, but one advantage would be compiling to native binaries versus dealing with the JVM. Overall it might be a bit simpler to build/ship applications. At the cost of ofc being less mature and smaller ecosystem. Due to how Java handles null tho, might have to write *less* tests as your code just wouldnt compile if you didnt handle it
