jaeger: i use my M1 to do various arm64 linux needs with vmware and TBH it still beats out my rpi5 by miles in performance
<r0ni>
vmware fusion has 3d accel and everything from gnome, kde,xfce,etc all run great in VMs for me
<r0ni>
hell I use my M1 as my primary dev and build host for crux-arm stuff even... it's damn good perf wise
<r0ni>
and qemu using UTM is decent as well but i have various networking issues using it as it don't like my VPN so i stick to vmware
<r0ni>
the only issue is the lack of avail methods to create your VMs... easy solution is gentoo live boot iso and instead of installing gentoo, install crux (or whatever) or debian, ubuntu images work OOTB as well'
<jaeger>
hrmm, good to know, thanks. I'll give it another try sometime. Done a lot with containers there but not really a desktop VM. I've used qemu directly and utm on top of it a bit
<r0ni>
I might be biased but I really say it from the heart, performance is so good in a vm, I haven't booted my asahi install _this year_ (but thats partially because its debian). My irc client runs on macos and i'm usually in a VM when I'm working on crux ports. If my macmini were a macbook it'd be my most used system. People really sleeping on how well these things actually perform
<r0ni>
i uploaded a new firefox build for 128.0.3 https://rekt.lngn.net/crux-arm/arm64/ in my package repo (the script fails cuz the --disable-eme opt) it's been failing since 127, might need it's own arm64 port
<jaeger>
Yeah, they do perform really well
<jaeger>
The part that I'm still having trouble finding is how to actually get 3d acceleration going inside the VM with qemu
<r0ni>
that i'm unsure of offhand, they have a discord (... I know) where they are pretty helpful with questions & answers, but its been a long time since I've used utm VMs, I am pretty sure the mesa build includes the right modules on arm64
