Stalevar: I think they are comparable with top Ryzen laptops by performance and performance/watt, at least X1E, so the price is not that high.
<krzk>
Although let me retract that a bit - X1E are actually more expensive than comparable (and fastest) compact Ryzen laptops, so indeed it seems they target Mac users...
<Stalevar>
I was wondering if something faster or similar to Intel Processor N100 exist for similar price
<Stalevar>
It seems that Intel somehow managed to make a performing and inexpensive CPU which consumes relatively little power
<Stalevar>
Which always was meant to be ARM niche
<Stalevar>
Like ARM based nettop for $100-200 which has 16 or more GiB CPU power
<arnd>
The new MT8188 based Chromebooks are quite promising, just merged support for Lenovo Chromebook Duett (11" - 9) for 6.14
<Stalevar>
and good CPU power
<arnd>
it's not as fast as X1E of course, but should be a nice improvement over earlier chromebooks
<Stalevar>
I have Samsung Chromebook Snow but battery died
<arnd>
not sure if you can get one with 16GB, usually you're lucky to get an 8GB model
<Stalevar>
So ARM laptops are currently still impractical?
<Stalevar>
It's just Raspberry Pi 5 for instance costs more than Intel N150 nettop with more RAM and storage
<Stalevar>
And for RPi you'd need to get cooling system separately
<Stalevar>
Nettop like ARM machines such as TV set top boxes have good metal case sometimes but usually only have 2 or 4 G RAM which is not enough for a full-fledged PC
<arnd>
I'm pretty happy with both my Macbook Air and the Chromebooks I have. The problem with 4GB RAM on Chromebooks is the same for both arm and x86 models
<arnd>
8GB is usually fine for what they are targetting, 4GB is not
<Stalevar>
Mine has 2G RAM

<arnd>
There is a huge difference between Exynos5 and modern qualcomm or mediatek based Chromebooks, even the (now old) mt8183 ones are much better than a Cortex-A15
<arnd>
Snow had the additional problem of bad eMMC, in addition to the underpowered CPU and only having 2GB
<Stalevar>
I understand, but it seems that it's impractical. Because you can get N100 nettop for $150 with 512G SSD and 16G RAM
<Stalevar>
Can one compare something like MT8188 and N100?
<arnd>
I'd expect the N100 to come out on top on performance and the MT8188 to be better on power consumption there, but I haven't seen any numbers
<Stalevar>
I don't think it is a good idea to target Mac users, though. Because why they buy ultra-expensive Macs? Because of brand, mostly, not because they have cool ARM CPU, I think
<Stalevar>
So even if Snapdragon Elite is similarly fast, few would buy it
<arnd>
N100 Chromebooks are a lot more expensive than MT8183 ones with similar configuration, I can't find any prices for MT8188 ones in Germany, so not sure how those compare
<Stalevar>
Hm, weird. N100 is fairly cheap
<Stalevar>
N100 + 16G + 512G SSD in fairly neat case was $140 one year ago
<Stalevar>
Laptops sold this days are about $260

<Stalevar>
What is your hypothesis? Could it be that they are producing laptops with little RAM and such because it's soldered on and they want people to buy new chromebook after some years rather than keep using same one for a decade or more?
<Stalevar>
For example I am still using over decade old laptop here, because of replaceable RAM I was able to get it up to 8G RAM, which is good enough for most things today (but not good enough for a new PC which is meant to work for years to come)
<Stalevar>
Mac Mini would be a good medium-power nettop if it was provided with at least 16G, but most used Mac Mini are sold with 8G for price which can get you a good new x86 miniPC
<Stalevar>
And newer mac mini are impractical for complete absence of USB-A port

Stalevar: I don't care if some company sells their product overpriced. Might be good idea, might be bad. Every company can sell their stuff overpriced or to wrong customers and who I am to judge? I bear no risk, so easily to give advices to them :)
<krzk>
and btw people buy expensive macs because of their quality, easy/good software and extreme performace with great battery life, so even though I am not mac user, I know people buying them not for brand
<krzk>
although I also agree that probably many more are buying for brand as well... well, brand is everything, no logo :)

<Stalevar>
krzk, problem is not quite with macs being overpriced, but with steep cost curve with soldered on RAM and SSD
<Stalevar>
Like if you buy 8G/256G Mac M1/M2 your money are wasted
<Stalevar>
And for that money you could have bought N100 / 16G / 512G nettop
<Stalevar>
And not just one but like three or four
