nobody has asked for it in a while. I think viro ran into a problem with older compilers recently, but that was for anything older than 8.1, so that is unlikely to happen soon
<arnd>
I see a lot of build warnings with 5.x that I think are all addressed in 6.x

arnd: Ok. But some features are not likely to build with older compilers?
<milkylainen>
hmm ASAN?
<arnd>
milkylainen: correct, features that need a newer compiler should all be guarded by Kconfig dependencies so you can't even enable them

arnd: ok. I interpret it as 5.x is likely to work for basic stuff for a while longer?
<arnd>
milkylainen: I think the next time someone wants to increase the minimum, there won't be a lot of complaints. It's been 18 months since we moved up to 5.1, the question is just if the new minimum would become 6, 7 or 8
<arnd>
8.1 is the one that is most popular in still supported distros, but that would be a rather large jump
<arnd>
OTOH as long as it's not causing problems, we'll probably stay with 5.x
<milkylainen>
mkay.

I have this customer sticking to an older toolchain setup but building rather newish kernels.
