broonie: hi, I've a strange issue on a driver. A patch broke SPI but no I2C, the driver is a "core" that just uses regmap and there are transport drivers that just set-up the regmap and call the core driver probe

broonie: by adding printous I see tha the regmap writes happen for both I2C and SPI, but only the device works with the former. I'm puzzled. Any ideas?

broonie: my guess is that has something to do with the fact that SPI is async but I2C sync?

You have to ask to make SPI async.

By default it's sync.

broonie: ah, I misread then the regmap spi and thought async was the default

then I've no idea how a change in a core driver could affect regmap spi but no regmap i2c...

It could be down to the I2C hardware busy waiting and the SPI hardware being interrupt driven or something? For that sort of thing I'd turn on lockdep and similar stuff, it'll probably scream if there's something dodgy.

broonie: not specifically, usually platform maintainers send me patches to change settings for their platforms, or I pick up changes that are sent to soc@kernel.org directly when they are not soc specific

Yeah, 6.3 is probably reasonable. It's just that it's getting late enough in the cycle for people to start cutting off applying new changes.
