<arnd> marex: I'm digging through mach-pxa archaeology and arrived at drivers/ata/pata_palmld.c, which you wrote. I have a patch that removes arch/arm/mach-pxa/palmld.c itself, but I wonder if the pata driver is actually palmld specific, or if it would work for any CF card or microdrive on the remaining PXA machines in place of drivers/pcmcia/pxa2xx_base.c and drivers/ata/pata_pcmcia.c. Any idea?

<marex> arnd: remove it
<marex> arnd: it was like some ... weird ... ISA bus ... routed out of the SoC with some specific configuration
<marex> arnd: the palmld one was palmld specific
heat has joined #armlinux
<arnd> marex: ok, got it. I was hoping we could retire the pcmcia driver, but that'sa bit harder then, and I'll just remove this one instead
<marex> arnd: is there any other pxa machine which uses pcmcia ?
<marex> well, palmtc had some wifi in it, palmld too
<marex> voipac had pcmcia slot, full sized no less
<marex> I think
<arnd> the only remaining machines after boardfile cleanup are now assabet, assabet-neponset, sharpsl and gumstix. The first three all have pcmcia or cf, only gumstix does not
<marex> oh, zaurus
<marex> ummmmmm ... yeah, those had it all
<arnd> assabet is sa1100 not pxa of course, but it shares most of the driver
<marex> it was mostly the same stuff from sa110 until pxa320 I think
<marex> after that, I dont know
* bjdooks wonders if the designware core is at fault or the problem is with something missing in linux's pci probe
<bjdooks> I now have pretty much every example of chepa ASMedia switch known to man
<arnd> I'm fairly sure we can kill off support for non-storage cards in all of them without anyone complaining. So the idea I had was to move sata-pcmcia, pcmcia-core, pcmcia-soc-common and pcmcia-pxa2xx into a single file and then cut down the bits that are no longer needed for dynamic probing etc. The result would probably look a lot like sata-palmld.c, but it's a long way to get there
<arnd> marex: we never supported pcmcia on the later pxa/mmp chips, I would guess they didn't actually have that, or nobody used it in products at that point
<marex> arnd: we surely support pxa270 PCMCIA for WiFi, that worked ... PXA320 maybe ... and mmp2 if that's pxa168 then I don't know
<marex> arnd: I think we are talking about the same thing here
<arnd> marex: any idea which pcmcia wifi driver one might have used? I looked at the ones that are left in tree a while ago and they all appear unmaintained
<marex> arnd: marvell libertas for 88w8385
<marex> there was something else, wait
<marex> arnd: palmtc used asus wl-155 , intersil prism
<marex> palmld used 88w8305, but there was never a proper firmware for that, palmtx used 88w8381 which had kind-of working firmware
<marex> tri-something , german company , was selling CF-sized 88W8385 for zaurus too
<marex> I might still have one here

<arnd> ah right, I forgot about libertas. that looks slightly less busted than the other drivers (atmel, airo, orinoco, ...) that probably all broke in the pre-git period because of some ioctl rework
<marex> arnd: wifi is just a broken disaster in general
<CounterPumpkin> so am I but I've still touched the kernel
<marex> arnd: iirc there was session at LPC about this too
