punit: DL20L is extremely quiet compared to, say, the Sun T1000. and at least on the Alpha, it is easier to tame the fans (while the Sun refuses to boot without all fans spinning at 40k+ rpm/s).
<maz>
rpm* (rpm/s doesn't make any sense...)

maz: no, rpm/s is the important measure of whether the fans come on at full scream right away, or slowly spin up so you start thinking "uh-oh, how long can this thing keep getting louder!?" :D

<tmlind>
seems like the rpm/s is also multiplied by the number of fans :)

<bjdooks>
anyone had pcie probe issues with pcie asmedia "bitcoin" extenders?

<maz>
bjdooks: I have to use "pci=pcie_bus_safe" on an AmLogic SoC with a ASM1184e switch.
<bjdooks>
maz: ok, will try with that
<bjdooks>
hmm, not helped with the asm1806
<maz>
what error are you getting?
<maz>
errors*
<CounterPumpkin>
if this is one of those horrible things abusing USB3 cables then I am not surprised things aren't working so well.
<maz>
CounterPumpkin: with the right power supply and conservative signalling, they work pretty well for me (my gateway has been using that for the past 2.5 years).
cbeznea has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<bjdooks>
maz: not seeing any errors, but we're not getting any devices detected.

<maz>
bjdooks: feels like a power issue. I get that if the individual devices don't get properly powered (some boards require per-slot power).
<maz>
do you have a pointer to the exact switch board you're using?
<bjdooks>
no, and it keeps deciding it is either a ASM1824 or an ASM1806
<bjdooks>
then ASM1184e doesn't even probe the ASM device :/
<bjdooks>
going to see if I can pickup an ASM1187e based oneas testing
<maz>
I also have a PI7C9X2G404 which works pretty well.

bjdooks: that's random stuff I scored on eBay at the point I needed it. for example, this one works fine, but is very awrward from a mechanicam perspective:
