cr1901 changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, CD/floppy disk theory of operation, and the 68k CPU are also on-topic. <fseidel>
does anyone in here know why Treasure's MD games (Dynamite Headdy especially) have PCM that sounds so much better than other SMPS-derived games?
<fseidel>
I know they have a custom PCM player, but I also bet they're doing a ton of mid-frame DMAs, which usually are the enemy of nice-sounding PCM
<fseidel>
(maybe my assumption is wrong?)
<cr1901_web>
Could it be as simple as "they had extra room to store higher quality samples"?
<cr1901_web>
analogous to the Sonic 1 prototype vs final
<fseidel>
one of the major issues with MD PCM quality is that no one can touch ROM when the VDP is doing a DMA
<fseidel>
which means that if the Z80 goes to fetch another sample byte, it'll stall until the DMA finishes
<fseidel>
I figure Treasure are doing some sort of buffering to get around this, but I'm curious exactly what, since so many MD games have really crappy PCM

<ValleyBell>
fseidel: Treasure's MD games do extra buffering to avoid accessing the ROM while doing DMAs.
<ValleyBell>
It is even 2-channel PCM.
<ValleyBell>
and they have 0x80 bytes of buffer per channel, IIRC.

hey Foone do you follow cathode ray dude on patreon
<Foone>
I believe so yeah
<Foone>
actually, no. but I just fixed that.
<andlabs>
wel check that next video
<andlabs>
it has something that is Your Kind of Cursed
<andlabs>
oh of course he shows your twitter thread on the subject on screen lol
<Foone>
yeah I've joked before that my life goal is to ensure that a tweet of mine comes up whenever you google any weird old hardware or software
<andlabs>
well you already succeeded twice for me

<andlabs>
for that Central Point Copy II card I have and for that Hyperflex floppy drive that might be in my Amiga 2000
<Foone>
oh wow, you might have a hyperflex?
<andlabs>
I'm not sure
<andlabs>
I have not taken the dirve entirely out of the machine, and the only indication ofw hat it is I have is...
<andlabs>
"HF24-DR"
<Foone>
you wanna know how rare that term is?
<andlabs>
as a part number
<Foone>
the first hit on google for it is a log from this channel
<andlabs>
lol
<cr1901>
hah...
<andlabs>
this machinew as apparently ex-NASA
<andlabs>
I still haven't imaged the hard disk that was in it
<andlabs>
it has a sticker that says "RSX-1" on it so I'm hoping hte drive still has some software used for instrumentation
<andlabs>
someone else I used to talk to pointed me at a relevant whitepaper
<andlabs>
and maybe the weird 5.25" floppy drive in the machine was used to store data?
