<mischief> hm, how do i extrude the inner faces after using difference extrusion on text?
<mischief> making a nametag thing where the text is cut out of a rectangle, but for letters like A and R i need to attach the inner pieces for 3d printing
<ghane> mischief: for that usecase, wouldn't it work well to just not cut the text all the way through the rectangle?

<mischief> ghane: i want the text to be 'holes' though :-)
<mischief> ghane: here's the model: https://litter.catbox.moe/i1yp1f.slvs
<mischief> i want to attach the inner pieces of A and R but not sure how
<freem> I have the same problem lol
<freem> the idea I thuoght is, my father needs this for painting with a spray
<freem> so, I could build "U" to join the inner and outter letters, the spray should be able to colour the underside despite this, if the "U" is high enough
<mischief> i wanted to make this as a keychain for my mother
<ghane> if it is ok with "manual" work I would just add some rectangles fixing them from the top or bottom surface of the rectangle
<freem> there's also transparent filaments, but I have no experience with those
<ghane> transparent filaments would work if it is ok to not have it cut out for the keychain
<ghane> but filament swapping would be a pain :)
<ghane> would waste half a spool to purge the color when switching to transparent
<mischief> i just have solid filament. not a problem if i just make the connectors small.
<ghane> mischief: like this? https://litter.catbox.moe/ge50yz.slvs
<mischief> yea pretty much :-)
<ghane> just a new plane from the bottom and add some rectangles and extude up to half (of full) thickness of the rectangle
<ghane> for the spray pattern maybe a finer mesh over everything would be better
<mischief> i guess it makes sense to go from the bottom rather than the inner wall of the character
<ghane> of course depending on what you want :)
<ghane> hmm, for those specific usecases one could also experiment with slicer hacks
<mischief> at some point i will need to switch to prusa i think
<ghane> combining a solid rect with the one with cut outs in the slicer, printing the solid one with 0 top and bottom layers
<mischief> cura is being removed from gentoo :<
<ghane> so basically creating a infill mesh holding the pieces in place
<ghane> ah
<ghane> I have not used Cura since they messed up the user interface :)
<mischief> its what my printer mfg had in their docs so thats what i got started on
<ghane> ah
<mischief> but apparently there's no maintainer and too hard to fix the deps so gentoo will remove it in some months
<ghane> I did follow upstream Cura since the beginning
<ghane> but it got slower and slower
<ghane> it's funny, since I used slic3r before Cura
<ghane> and now prusa slicer which is based on slic3r :)
<ghane> I can sometimes start prusa slicer and slice the model and export it in the same time that it takes for cura to start
<ghane> so pretty much prefer it theese days (again)
<mischief> strange, i dont have such problems with cura, though my pc is quite fast
<mischief> then again, cura is a pile of python goo it seems
<mischief> ghane: is there a way to make contstraints on the font edges or at least align datum point somehow?
<mischief> or some kind of edge-snapping thing when placing :-)
<ghane> mischief: I think what you can do is just switch to side view and align points horizontally for that
<mischief> can't get it to work
<mischief> too bad
<mischief> i guess i'll just move the bits manually and hope it prints
<ghane> do you want me to have a look at the file?
<ghane> I only have a really old solvespace on this computer so it might not work properly
<mischief> no, it's ok
<mischief> i'm printing now and we'll see how it turns out :-)
<ghane> :)
<mischief> came out decently enough, i'm sure my mom will like it
