i'm wondering about the "has nothing special to offer" part of the article, ox1eef_. i feel that's not true. sure there's probably no single feature of ruby not found in another language as well. but i've always disliked this sort of feature-based thinking. it's about the whole mix of things, isn't it

Yeah, I'm not sure I agree with that either. But Ruby missed the train when it comes to data science. And it so happens that a lot of people in academics use Python. That has some nice knock-on effects in that there's very smart people contributing open source libraries / projects. The bar of entry for Ruby is low, and that's sometimes a double-edged sword.

I don't know if I agree with the idea that JavaScript being an "everywhere" language is a good thing either. It's a good thing if you know one language, and don't want to go beyond that, which by itself I think is a bad sign. And will only get you so far.

there is a certain "ignorance is bliss and isn't my bubble oh so blissful" effect from only knowing a single language which i think has a big potential to be harmful
<rapha>
would have been lovely if ruby had become the data science / academic language of choice, but yeah. wasn't at the right place in the right time and not performant enough back then, either.
<rapha>
whenever i have to write python i wish it'd take some hints and pointers from ruby. quite a lot of them in fact.

tried to switch to OpenBSD at some point but ended up not feeling very welcome; everything was quite elitist
<ox1eef_>
Re - one language, that's a good way to put it :)

I've had only good experiences in the OpenBSD community. And same for FreeBSD.
<rapha>
this was around 2003, so yeah, perhaps things were a little more complicated also, and i'm sure i was a lot more dumb :P

Ah, yeah. Decades ago :) It could have been back then, and I think it's a common perception of OpenBSD. I've met only helpful people in #OpenBSD. They seem quite laid back, and tolerant.
<rapha>
how is hardware support these days? would it run on a random laptop?
<ox1eef_>
FreeBSD / NetBSD probably would. For OpenBSD, the safest bet is usually a Lenovo ThinkPad.
<rapha>
oh, alright. i've only ever owned thinkpads starting with a 701cs. with the exception of the pinebook pro. hello to you from the pinebook pro :)
<rapha>
hihihihi ... "Why would you want to do such a thing? Because you can."
<ox1eef_>
I think choosing the right hardware is the most important step. It plays a big role in how pleasant or unpleasant the experience will be. I bought a ThinkPad just for OpenBSD. And I was blessed that my IdeaPad could run FreeBSD.
<rapha>
my PBP will remain as it is as it's my travel / cafe laptop. but at some point i might grab one of the old thinkpads and give it another go!
<ox1eef_>
Worth it :))
<rapha>
the PBP internally needs another USB port broken out and a non-SPI bluetooth adapter attached. on the SPI one, the audio always has these sort of hickups
<rapha>
been meaning to get into that
<ox1eef_>
Looks like a nice machine.
<rapha>
and there's some problem with the I2S and the speakers which causes them to only make a terrible high-pitch chirping sort-of noise. that seems to be there only for some distros. hopefully someone will find it and fix it.
<rapha>
yes, it is ox1eef_, if you're the kind of person who's controlled enough to be able to make do with 4GB of RAM.
<ox1eef_>
I like a chalenge xD
