wow. i was just trying to login to the discord thing (to see how it looks and whether i could bridge it to irc), and was asked to create an account, give a telephone number and send an sms verification code, then give an email and click a verification link, then introduce a password 3 times (all that with repeated "i'm not a robot" verification captchas in between, 4 of them) and then, finally, i've been just sent an email tel
<jao>
that my account is disabled because "i've violated dicord's ToS"!!!????

i'm of course never getting near a discord server again :)
<williewillus>
yup, the amount of information locked up in closed Discord servers (and Slack) is insane
<williewillus>
or servers that have time limits before you can talk
<williewillus>
can't join a guild, quickly ask a question, then leave, the service wants you to stay and idle
<williewillus>
I don't agree with Drew Devault on everything but his stance on using only foss services to host foss projects is a major one

yes, it makes perfect sense to me. in a way, i'm grateful discord treated me in that awful way, i was being weak :)

it's a pity the racket community has locked itself in those walled gardens, at least from my point of view. out of my reach. sigh.
<williewillus>
i mean this place exists. There was talk of bridging general on discord here but not sure what happened to those discussions
<williewillus>
also Discourse at least is foss

unfortunately, i also dislike discourse for other reasons (i don't want to live in a browser). but at least it has that "mailing list mode" that makes it passable, and even marginally better than a googlegroup full of spam. i can live with that. a bridge would be great, although i'm suspecting discord will be as unfriendly to it as slack is.

it should be fine, the ocaml irc is also bridged to its discord's general channel
<williewillus>
which is honestly as good as it'll get nowadays

well, if someone on the discord side reads this, here's my vote for having the same in this channel, fwiw
