The issue I had with flash verification that casted doubt whether there still is a bug I also now have with all other boards until https://review.openocd.org/c/openocd/+/7658 gets merged. That revert (7658) fixes also flash verification for the qn908x flash driver, so that issue was unrelated. As far as I can tell, that patch is ready for merge.
