<rcurtin[m]> I'm back from vacation! now it's time to sort through tons of email 😄
<shrit[m]> How was your vacation
<shrit[m]> ?
<rcurtin[m]> it was great! actually I am not home yet, but the only thing remaining really is a boring drive down highways I know well, so I figured I would catch up on emails and get back into the swing of things while Emily drove :)
<rcurtin[m]> really enjoyed Vermont and New Hampshire and the New England area... did some beautiful hiking in the mountains there
<rcurtin[m]> and this week we hit the museums in DC... spent a lot of time in the National Gallery, and also the Air and Space Museum to see planes and rockets
<shrit[m]> Great to hear
<shrit[m]> What things did you prefer the most?
<rcurtin[m]> I enjoyed the National Gallery more than I thought... Emily's first degree was an art degree, and her hobby is painting, so walking around galleries with her is like having a live Wikipedia---I learned tons of cool details that I would have never perceived on my own
<rcurtin[m]> also went to the Hirshhorn Museum which has more modern art, and they had a really great exhibit on the works of [Laurie Anderson](https://hirshhorn.si.edu/exhibitions/laurie-anderson-the-weather/), who I didn't know anything about. it was quite well-done and powerful, although I doubt the page I linked to does it much justice
<rcurtin[m]> one other really cool thing was that the Air and Space Museum had a big exhibit on timekeeping and navigation, which was way cooler than I expected. I guess I had never thought about just how difficult it is, when in the ocean, to determine what your longitude is. latitude is easy, but longitude needs very accurate clocks
<rcurtin[m]> I also learned how sextants work and now I kind of want to use one, but I don't think it's actually useful these days...

<shrit[m]> Yeah, I see what you mean
<shrit[m]> I suppose this is the first time you have been in DC area?
<shrit[m]> I always have this U.S. visiting dilemma, If I want to visit the U.S I do not know where to go. I do not know if I would go see museums, since I have only that in my life.
<shrit[m]> My wife hobby is painting too, so I get a lesson on each painting we see.
<shrit[m]> * have only done that in
