rcurtin: hey, do you use windows?

<rcurtin[m]>
jonpsy no, that's part of why debugging Windows builds is so hard for me 😃

<jonpsy[m]>
Ah, but I thought you were into gaming?
<jonpsy[m]>
So, I recall stumbling upon your chat about hard disks
<rcurtin[m]>
my main desktop does dual-boot, but every time I boot into Windows it's an awful experience and so these days I just look for games that run on Linux (which luckily is most of them now 😄)
<jonpsy[m]>
haha, i see
<jonpsy[m]>
jonpsy[m]: It's about my laptop. I notice a spike on hard disk usage every time I open an application, straight up 97%
<jonpsy[m]>
although it dies down a while later, I don't notice that in other PC running Windows (atleast not to this extent)
<rcurtin[m]>
I know it's not very helpful advice but my only thought is "use Linux"... one of the reasons I've had such bad experiences with Windows recently is that it does all kinds of stuff magically and under the hood and as a user it's really hard to figure out what's going on, and also to take control
<rcurtin[m]>
there's no guarantee that Linux won't also do strange things like that, but at least it will be a little easier to figure out what is going on 😃
<jonpsy[m]>
haha true
<jonpsy[m]>
but the thing is, if it was Window's fault, then I should've experienced the same with other laptops which I don't
<jonpsy[m]>
so, imagine your laptop semi-hang's everytime you open a new app
<rcurtin[m]>
yeah, that could be a hardware issue, but it could also be some strange thing Windows is choosing to do
<jonpsy[m]>
correct1
<jonpsy[m]>
after some research, it was suggested that maybe a detoriating hardware could be the problem
<jonpsy[m]>
s/after some research, it was suggested that maybe a detoriating hardware could be the problem/after some research, it was suggested that maybe a detoriating hard disk could be the problem/
<rcurtin[m]>
I'm not sure what's available on Windows, but maybe with a livecd or something you can use smartmontools (e.g. `smartctl`) to test the hard drive
<rcurtin[m]>
ha... "livecd"... I think I am dating myself here... I suppose now it would be "live usb" :)
<jonpsy[m]>
jonpsy[m]: because i got this laptop rather cheap on 38k INR, while usually it costs somewher in 42-47k
<jonpsy[m]>
and it was like this since I purchased this.
<rcurtin[m]>
out of curiosity, did you reinstall Windows, or did it come with everything already set up?
<jonpsy[m]>
all setup
<jonpsy[m]>
but ive formatted it clean and re-installed windows about 3 times till now
<rcurtin[m]>
ah, ok, so that at least rules out a bad configuration from the previous owner (or, it should rule that out, at least)
<jonpsy[m]>
was i scammed of poor hard disk in the name of cheap price?
<jonpsy[m]>
is what im thinking
<rcurtin[m]>
possibly, but you should run some tests on it to try and learn more
<rcurtin[m]>
I am not sure what the case is with modern laptops, but at least in the past it was not too much trouble to change a hard drive
<jonpsy[m]>
do you think very long respond time, disk usage spike on opening applications can be due to cheap hard disk?
<jonpsy[m]>
so, when i first boot windows. It takes ~2 minutes to even respond to my clicks.
<jonpsy[m]>
and god forbid you open intenret browser during this 2 minute
<rcurtin[m]>
ha, so that sounds like my most recent experience with Windows... the game "Divinity: Original Sin 2" does not run on Linux, so I booted up my Windows install on a brand new desktop with an M.2 drive that should be super, super fast
<rcurtin[m]>
and... it acted like you just described
<rcurtin[m]>
minutes to get to the login screen (vs. a few seconds with Linux)
<rcurtin[m]>
after login, double-clicking the icon to start the game did nothing... for minutes and minutes
<rcurtin[m]>
and loading the game could take anywhere between 3-10 minutes
<jonpsy[m]>
True!
<jonpsy[m]>
Out of curiousty, you'er using HDD or SSD on that laptop?
<rcurtin[m]>
that was a desktop, and it's an SSD... hang on, let's see what transfer speeds are
<jonpsy[m]>
are you sure its an SSD? I thought its an HDD problem. Also can you check the hard disk % when opening new apps
<rcurtin[m]>
Timing buffered disk reads: 5904 MB in 3.00 seconds = 1967.60 MB/sec
<rcurtin[m]>
I finished the game some months back, and I am not booting Windows again unless someone absolutely forces me to, it was so awful
<rcurtin[m]>
during these moments after login where the system was unresponsive, I would try and get the task manager open and couldn't even do that
<jonpsy[m]>
rcurtin[m]: for science!
<jonpsy[m]>
haha
<jonpsy[m]>
rcurtin[m]: same, I thought SSD would be the end-all solution for this. None of my friends who use SSD face anything remotely like this.
<rcurtin[m]>
well, it at least wasn't for me. typical spinning-disk HDD speeds might be below 100 MB/sec, so one would think 2GB/s would be good enough for Windows, but apparently not...
<rcurtin[m]>
in your case, it sounds like it might be worthwhile to gather more information about the disk itself and see if you can run any tests to determine if there are hardware issues
<rcurtin[m]>
if it was Linux, I'd run a test like `smartctl -t long /dev/sdX` and wait a while to see the results and check `dmesg`, but I'm not sure what's available to do that on Windows
<jonpsy[m]>
as you said, I don't face such problems in Linux
<jonpsy[m]>
The lag's there, but not as pronounced as in Windows
