you might get started by looking at the tutorials on the mlpack website and going through those

once you start to get comfortable with the library itself, you can take a look through the bug tracker at http://www.mlpack.org/trac/, or possibly implement a machine learning algorithm that you find interesting and have good knowledge of and contribute that to mlpack
