<ajb-linaro> is Android's AVF the only way to launch pKVM guests?
<maz> ajb-linaro: no, you can happily boot in protected mode and run guests. you need to hack you favourite VMM if you want to run *protected* guest though.

<ajb-linaro> maz: do you need to be a protected guest to take advantage of the guest hypercalls (ARM_SMCCC_KVM_FUNC_HYP_MEMINFO etc) into pkvm?
russ_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<maz> yes. these hypercalls make no sense for non-protected guests.

<ajb-linaro> maz: can kvm-tool launch protected guests?
<ajb-linaro> hmm all the references to protected in the kvm/api.rst reference seem to be s390 based

<maz> ajb-linaro: I had some hacks to do that with kvmtool, but left it behind. crosvm is the correct tool for the job, it seems.
<maz> in any case, what's upstream isn't very interesting (it lacks all most of the good stuff).
<maz> however, there is no new userspace API for pkvm. only the machine type has an extra bit IIRC.

<ajb-linaro> maz: that does imply its under-tested on the upstream - I shall have a look at what crosvm does
<maz> ajb-linaro: feel free to do the testing if you care.
<maz> given the "quality" of the KVM testing infrastructure, we're probably better off without testing.

<ajb-linaro> maz: well mostly I wanted to review and understand the pkvm/smmu patches and need some way to get a system up and running. The wider scope is making sure we are implementing enough of QEMUs system emulation to be able to run these various configurations

<ajb-linaro> I guess KVM_VM_TYPE_ARM_PROTECTED is still to land upstream
