<ukleinek>
geertu: I see I didn't Cc: you for the pwm-rcar patch. Should we mangle MAINTAINERS to change that?
<geertu>
ukleinek: Adding linux-renesas-soc should be fine
<geertu>
For pwm-rcar, I only look at formulas involving mult/div ;-)

I think `make xconfig` is really good because you can search for "LOCKDEP" and the symbol "CONFIG_LOCKDEP" simply doesn't appear.
<Stalevar>
Can you recommend a relatively recent hardware and OS for a smartphone which doesn't report everything to google, apple, microsoft or whatever?
<Stalevar>
Which doesn't cost a grand like Librem or Pine
<Stalevar>
I'm thinking about Postmarket OS but maybe there are better things

<ajb-linaro>
PostmarketOS and Lineage (Android fork) are the two I'm aware of, but I suspect those projects are the best places to ask about which hardware is best supported
<ajb-linaro>
Stalevar see the table: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices - its usually the Camera where things get sketchy, likely because most phone cameras hide behind very proprietary IPS backends
<Stalevar>
I'm not convinced that Lineage OS is clean enough, tbh
<ajb-linaro>
its not - but its more likely to have all the devices working because of the AOSP base

<LeSpocky>
Stalevar: you also might consider GrapheneOS, but that runs on Google Pixel devices only, at least also on older ones
<Stalevar>
LeSpocky, how much can it be trusted not to report user activity? GrapheneOS is said to depend on Android security patches, so it's basically modded android, right?
<Stalevar>
I think it's better to run a system which doesn't have any android components at all
<Stalevar>
But it seems even ubuntu Touch has some android pieces in it, which is worrying
<Xogium>
kind of wish I could have toyed with different systems too, tbh. But since the screen reader on android belongs to google, there is no point installing a custom system for me, I couldn't use it :p
<Xogium>
Stalevar: truth is, you can't expect this anytime soon

<Xogium>
99% of android vendors have their own forked linux kernel for their hardware. If you tried running anything but android on there, truth is that most likely, most of the hardware, possibly even the display on your phone, wouldn't work
<Stalevar>
Xogium, PinePhone Pro has same chip as in OrangePi4, which I have
<Stalevar>
postmarketOS is based on mainline linux for example
<Xogium>
yes, but see, those pinephone and such run hardware meant to be used not just in android but also linux. They're sold as linux based phones, not android
<Xogium>
but if you took a random android phone from a brand like apo, or even huawei back when they used to run android, you couldn't run linux on this
<Xogium>
most android vendors keep the source code of their kernel closed at worst, and to be requested and on demand only at best
<LeSpocky>
Stalevar: LineageOS is also Android, you can get it without Google Apps, but it's Android on top of a highly patched kernel
<LeSpocky>
Xogium: the PostmarketOS wiki is actually a good place to look what hardware components of a particular device work with a vanilla kernel, and which do not
<Xogium>
nice
<Xogium>
but my point was more that if you expect 100% feature parity, that is not going to be happening, or if it does it is very rare
<Stalevar>
The problem with Linux based phones is that they cost a grand while having rather low-key hardware
<Xogium>
Stalevar: agreed
