broonie: is there any guarantee in the order between prepare and audio_startup in snd_soc_dai_ops ?
<mripard>
or is prepare always going to be called after audio_startup
<ajb-linaro>
hmm it looks like I lost #kvm-arm in the IRC server reshuffle...

<broonie>
mripard: prepare() should be called after startup(), startup() is called when the PCM is opened.
ardb has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<mripard>
broonie: ok. And that's two separate ioctl right? so if one ignores the value returned by startup they could call still prepare
<mripard>
(and thus we can't really rely on a pointer checked in startup being !NULL in prepare for example)
<broonie>
startup() is called inside open() IIRC so the frameworks will probably prevent you from getting to prepare() if startup() failed but I'd need to double check.

<mripard>
yeah, it looks like snd_soc_dai_startup is indeed called at open

is there any practical difference between an eventfd and a standard socket fd in which you just writev/readv and monotonically increasing number? IOW can you use an eventfd to connect to userspace processes or would you just use a socket?
