<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> I think Armbian should not focus on the vendor kernel and desktop bs with these SBCs. Get down to basics and proper headless etiquette. If people want a desktop they can drag their ass back to the foundation.
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> if we provide some desktops, it doesn't mean we focus to it or vendor kernel. Desktop area we have to cover to some degree or someone else will. Only mistake is dealing with half working desktops. xfce, gnome, cinnamon works well
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> @IgorPec when it comes to RPI hardware you "have" to fovus on the kernel.. there is no choice
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> the RPI's are highly dependent on it
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> especially the 4
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> the mainline kernel is just about unuseable on a 4
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> it always about kernel, not just with rpi.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Not always as "much" as RPI/Broadcom though.. theirs is a whole world of mass pain
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> we don't have any focus on desktop. we have nobody dealing with and what i do there is keeping it functional
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> They work fine headless though
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> i know, but still if 3/4 people here are "we don't need desktop", 1/4 is still a lot 😉
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I have I think 8 bcm2711's running currently
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> i also don't have desktop in most of cases, but here where I run Discord, I do
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> and its Armbian desktop
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I just export X to my Mac through ssh lol
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> On my Linux VM
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> heheh
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> you have Mac, I don't 😉
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I did it on my x86 too
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> That's how I had my HP Omen setup
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> had to google , not familiar
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Gaming laptop
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> like gaming / workstation ?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> yeah
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I got one for a good price because they recalled the model
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> It was nice but I much prefer this Mac
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I still use it for a build server
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> mac is good, yeah
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> you will need to port armbian to it 😉 LOL
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> haahaa
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> now should not be that crazy anymore probably
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Doing it wouldn't be that hard... getting by the TPM is the hardest part
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> (drivers is the biggest hurdle besides TPM and that's just time)
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> asahi linux must have got somewhere
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Asahi has already done it so I know it can be done
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Question is what they "broke/bypassed" in the progress
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> and I'm very cautious about things like that
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> no idea, i don't pay attention
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> already too busy 😦 now understanding details of yet another hw platform
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> which one?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> apple
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> m1
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> oh I thought you meant a "current" new one
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> I don't have a Pi4 anymore so I can't test it, but I have a zero w and 3b+ both on mainline u-boot and linux right now and on a headless level they appear to be working fine. I don't think they even need the userland? but I would need to test that. But yeah, all the onboard seems to be working.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> In theory the bcm2711 should run better as thats the main focus by the foundation.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I tried one last week... it bombed
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I'm going to try another tomorrow... It was on a CM4 so I don't 100% trust that bcm2711
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> this will be on an actual pi 4
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> bbl.. gotta leave for a few hours
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> bad defconfig
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> i use to run my pi4 on mainline and it was fine. one thing with the pis is the defconfig used on the foundation kernel is not the same as what would be needed to run mainline.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> It wasn't the defconfig because it was generic. Remember they've changed it dramaticly since you had a PI 4
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Its been a mess. The 3's ans lower run fine.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Even with mainline the videocore support is a question mark. I'll need to see if it can be fully utilized.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> i re-worked the bcm2711 defconfig earlier this week. you should give that one a try and see if it makes a difference.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> the video core stuff even works on the 2710 now.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> or 2837 or whatever they call it on mainline.
